R is for Recommit

In one of my earlier posts, I went through the 8 tasks & framework I’ve been completing daily to keep me on track with hitting my goals. It has been going great but there is one adjustment I want to make…well actually two but the one we’re discussing today is part of the morning routine.

Many posts, gurus, challenges, etc. will suggest reading a non-fiction book in the morning, even if it’s for only 10 minutes. I heard it so many times that I incorporated it into my routine some time ago. Some days were awesome and I went into the day with great new insight. Other days, most days, my brain couldn’t focus on doing such a leisurely activity without wanting to fall back to sleep. Or having a million interrupting thoughts on things I needed to get started on for the day.

Instead of reading in the morning this past week, I’ve decided to focus on recommitting to my goals. I wrote a short poem/prayer that’s quick to recite and gets me up & moving. I’ve also caught myself randomly reciting it throughout the day. Whenever I get off track, the prayer serves as a reminder and helps me to refocus.

What I’m finding is working best for me is to focus on repetitive information that can serve as an anchor. Aside from the reasons above, intaking new information every morning wasn’t what I needed right as I was waking up. Especially as an overthinker. There would be days that I couldn’t focus on work because I was overanalyzing what I read from the morning which usually led to me rethinking all my routines and wondering if there was room to add another new thing.

With a solid framework of habits and routines, recommitting has helped me to solidify my foundation. I do still read in the morning from time to time since that is a habit that I have built up but I find it more useful and less stimulating to re-read a book that I have previously read to gain a deeper understanding of the contents.

Lastly, this lets me fully focus on implementing the information from all the previous reading and research I’ve done to formulate the framework in the first place. After 3 months or so, I’ll evaluate what worked and what adjustments need to be made to keep moving forward.
