The Art of Letting Go (Non-Scale Victories)

Writer's picture: BeeBee

I am such a fan of data. As the great philosopher,Jay Z, said “Men lie. Women lie. Numbers don’t. Hooooowever, it recently occurred to me that I may be a little too reliant on data. And really reliant might not be the right word…scapegoat may be more accurate.

Here’s the thing about data. If you look hard enough, you will find and/or create a dataset that supports your theory & belief. Lately I’ve been using my weigh-ins as a barometer of success. Logically, I know this is not the most accurate method. Hell, I even wrote an article about not putting all your trust in a scale on this very blog…yet here we are.

Weight goes down equals “YAY, I’m doing great!” Then the evil fat kid in my mind jumps for joy and suggests a celebration of junk food…because we can afford to eat it right? You know, since I’m doing so well & it would be a reward. Conversely, weight on the scale goes up and now I’m unnecessarily overcorrecting on calories.

So here’s what I’m proposing…to myself. I’m only going to focus on non-scale victories for the month of February AND (I’m going to try really hard) to not step on the scale at all! I’ll get my weight on January 31st then wait until March 1st. The main goal here is to really learn to trust the process.

If I focus on my healthy daily habits and routines then the results are bound to follow. By checking my weight daily, I feel like I’m the annoying kid constantly asking “Are we there yet?” when I really should just be enjoying the journey. Habits over results. Consistency over checking. Trusting the process.
